Laboratory manager

We are looking to hire an experienced laboratory manager to set up and run our labs. You will be responsible for the general day-to-day operations of the laboratory.

An ideal candidate for this position will handle the following responsibilities:

  • Managing all laboratory inventory, ordering reagents, supplies and equipment.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting all equipment and instrumentation in the labs.
  • Negotiating pricing with vendors, purchasing, and managing vendor relationships.
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with all government regulations regarding safety, use, and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials.
  • Preparing chemical solutions and assembling necessary consumables, equipment, and instrumentation required for in the lab.


  • Previous laboratory management experience and/or a BS/BA degree in chemistry/biochemistry or closely related field.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of research lab requirements.
  • Ability to work independently as the lab manager but also to work as part of the lab team when needed.
  • Strong desire to support the research operations of a fast-paced lab
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 60 lbs (occasionally) using a dolly or cart carrying supplies and equipment.
  • Must be flexible in prioritizing work to meet most pressing needs (highly variable duties common in a startup environment).

Automation engineer

We are looking to hire an experienced automation engineer to set up our robotics infrastructure. You will be responsible for automating and optimizing all our processes while working closely with scientists and software developers to rapidly develop microbial strains producing target compounds. Above all, the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems while maintaining a positive attitude is critical to success in this position.


  • Significant experience programming automated liquid handling systems (e.g. Tecan EVO or Fluent, Agilent Bravo, Beckman Coulter FX/NX, Hamilton STAR or Vantage) in a biotech setting.
  • Experience with protocol development and operation of integrated robotic systems and automation scheduling software.
  • Hands-on experience with assay development on automated systems: liquid handling performance qualification, biological assay optimization, and inter-/intra- assay performance validation.
  • Experience defining liquid classes, labware dimensions, robot teach points, and motion vectors.
  • Able to troubleshoot and proactively maintain automation equipment.
  • BS/MS in science or engineering discipline, minimum 3 years of relevant experience, PhD not required.

Additional preferred skills and experience:

  • Software development: desktop, web, mobile, database, or embedded using any programming language.
  • Mechanical design using CAD software and rapid prototyping with 3D printers, laser cutters, and/or CNC mills.
  • Basic electronic circuit design, layout, and assembly.
  • Experience with statistics and data analysis software, especially data reduction and visualization.

Scientist, analytical chemistry  

We are looking for a talented, highly-motivated individual to lead the development and application of quantitative analytical chemistry techniques in support of strain development efforts. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team developing new methods of strain cultivation, measurement, phenotyping, and analysis. The candidate will work with molecular biologists, automation experts, and chemists to efficiently perform analytical assays that contribute to rapid strain development.

An ideal candidate for this position will handle the following responsibilities:

Assay Development

  • Develop HTP assays to measure titer of a variety of target molecules including new bio-derived compounds generated through fermentation.
  • Provide theoretical and practical expertise in HPLC, GC, and spectroscopic (absorbance, fluorescence, FTIR, Raman, etc.) methods to develop improved HTP assays for target compounds.
  • Make use of enzyme-coupled assay expertise to develop HTP methods for measuring titer of target molecules.
  • Test new analytical techniques to be used in the context of high throughput screening.

Assay Operationalization

  • Convert and further improve protocols from partner companies to protocols for operations within highly automated workflows.
  • Improve existing detection techniques to increase the quality of data acquired and to decrease the associated costs and timelines.
  • Perform ongoing monitoring and support for analytical work.

Equipment, Data and Team Management

  • Purchase and maintain separations and detection equipment.
  • Upgrade systems through third party vendors and by adding peripheral components, and improve systems through custom upgrades and custom workflows.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors, repair support staff, and consumables and parts providers.
  • Interact with software engineers for the capture, storage, and processing of measurement and process data.


  • PhD and 1-2+ years working in a relevant field (biochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related).
  • Track record of both excellence in operations and creativity in assay development.
  • Familiarity with the tools of statistical process control, including use of control charts and software such as R, JMP, Spotfire, Plotly, or Tableau.

Software engineer

Data management and sophisticated tools for DNA design and experimental analysis are critical to rapid engineering of microorganisms. We are seeking a flexible, full stack F# software engineer to develop data management systems and algorithms for synthetic biology


  • Work with users and computing organization to design and implement data/lab management systems for synthetic biology
  • Collaboratively develop data schemas in Postgres to support data tracking
  • Develop server-side F# data services in a cloud environment
  • Develop client-side lab facing applications using Fable
  • Maintain standard code management, testing, continuous integration and review processes
  • Learn basic biology concepts
  • Comfortable working with automation engineers on data services that interact with robotics
  • Implement DNA search and design algorithms collaboratively with computational biologists
  • Contribute to ongoing evolution of software engineering department


  • CS degree or equivalent in quantitative discipline
  • 2+ years experience in F# development
  • 5+ years software engineering experience
  • 3+ years experience with relational databases
  • 2+ years user interface development
  • Exposure to laboratory based science environment ideal
